Otolaryngology Department Intern
The Otolaryngology department located in UC Davis Medical Center treats patients with ears, nose, and throat conditions. I assisted the nurses by cleaning and sterilizing medical instruments. I occasionally filed patient records. I cleaned exam rooms and restocked the drawers with the medical instruments. I also shadowed physicians.

Willow Flycatcher Project Assistant
The Willow Flycatcher Project studied the Willow Flycatcher, an endangered bird. One aspect of the study was to examine the different types of insects that were part of its habitat. Many samples of insects from different parts of the bird's habitat were collected and sent to the Bohart Museum for analysis. Using a microscope, I sorted thousands of insects into their specific phylum. I prepared the insects for display by mounting them onto pins and labeling them. I updated the insect inventory in the museum. I cared for the live insects in the museum by cleaning their tanks, refilling their water bowl, feeding them Eucalyptus tree leaves that I cut down, and separating the eggs from its parents. I also helped set up tours for science classes and the public.

Villablanca Cardiology Lab Intern
The Villablanca cardiology lab studies the effects of sex hormones on atherosclerosis development in mice. I learned how to safely handle mice. I learned how to extract the aorta from a mouse. I prepared the aorta sample for sectioning and created sections of the aorta using a cryostat machine. Next, I placed the sections of aorta onto glass slides and stained them with various dyes specific for proteins, fats, and nucleic acids. I learned safety guidelines for dealing with infectious agents. I cleaned lab equipment and made solutions such as the dyes. I shadowed the lab technician during certain procedures such as cell culture. Also, I attended lab meetings twice a quarter.

Cardiology Department Intern
The Cardiology department is an inpatient setting located in UC Davis Medical Center. I assisted the nurses by feeding the patients, helping the patients go to the bathroom, and transporting patients to their destinations within the hospital. I cleaned and organized the stock cabinets. I also shadowed physicians and nurses.

Emergency Medicine Research Associate
The Emergency Medicine Research Associate Program is a clinical research program. I collected patient information pertaining to emergency medicine studies by reading patient charts and interviewing them at the emergency department. I asked physicians and nurses questions about a patient's condition if it was unclear in his/her chart. I entered the data into a database. I learned how to read a patient chart and memorized the abbreviations for medical terms. I observed how the emergency department operated. There were several mandatory meetings during my first quarter as a research associate. These meetings provided a brief introduction to the research studies. The meetings also taught us statistical methods and how to perform sutures.

Cech Aquatic Lab Intern
The Cech aquatic lab studied the physiological adaptations and adjustments of fishes to their environments. I entered field data into Microsoft Excel and read research articles. I practiced implanting a radio transmitter into a fish. I learned how to locate a fish using a radio transmitter receiver. I monitored and fed captive fishes such as minnows and trout. I logged water parameters and fish mortalities. I cleaned field equipment. I also shadowed researchers as they conducted experiments on sturgeons.

Patient Advocate
The Paul Hom Asian Clinic (PHAC) is a student-run clinic that provides health care to the underserved Asian community. I interpreted the conversation between Cantonese-speaking patients and their physicians. I measured patient vitals such as blood pressure, height, weight, temperature, heart rate, and respiratory rate. I checked patients in, filed charts, assisted patients with referral forms, and cleaned exam rooms. I labeled and logged blood and urine samples. I processed patient drug prescriptions at our pharmacy. I explained the dosage and side effects for each drug to the patient. I also helped patients read their mail from home. I observed physicians as they treated their patients. I observed blood draws and injections. I participated in community service projects such as the Women's Health Fair (WHF). The WHF educated both men and women about preventing disease. We informed the public about the WHF by passing out flyers and calling them by phone. At the WHF, I presented my poster about osteoporosis and menopause in Cantonese and answered the people's questions. There were meetings every quarter lasting about 3 hours. We performed skits that helped improve our interpretation skills. We also had a workshop where we learned more Cantonese medical vocabulary and sentence structures.

Fairclough Neurology Lab Intern
The Fairclough neurology lab studies the torpedo acetylcholine receptor and its relation to the disease Myasthenia Gravis. I am working on an independent project studying the communication pathway between the acetylcholine binding domain and ion channel opening. I use various research techniques such as the Enzyme-Linked immunoSorbent Assay, Lowry Protein Assay, and Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate Polyacrylamide Gel Electrophoresis. The antibodies I am working with are 147G, 132A, 383C, 387D, 247G, and 370A. I work with a compound that is an antagonist of acetylcholine called proadifen. I train new interns. I also clean lab instruments and attend weekly meetings lasting about one hour. I present my data at the meetings.
